Why the Sony A6400 Is Still My Go-To for Street Photography
Over the years, I’ve tried my hand at many photography styles, from sports, event, to macro photography, but I found my passion in street photography, capturing the everyday and unplanned moments that make life unique. There’s something honest and raw about photographing the world as it is, rather than as it’s prepared to be. That love for spontaneous storytelling has shaped both my style and the gear I rely on.
When I first set out to find a camera that could handle a bit of everything without slowing me down, I landed on the Sony A6400, and honestly, it’s been one of my best decisions. Even years later, it remains my go-to setup for street photography, and often my first choice for travel, city walks, and even the occasional landscape or wildlife shot.
Lightweight, Discreet, and Ready for Anything
What first drew me to the A6400 was its size. It’s light, compact, and doesn’t scream “photographer” when you’re out shooting, which is exactly what you want when capturing street scenes. I’ve taken it everywhere from Sydney’s busy laneways and markets to the quiet backstreets of Kyoto and Osaka, and it’s never felt out of place.
Even though I own larger camera bodies and a range of lenses, I find myself reaching for the A6400 paired with the Sigma 18–50mm f/2.8 most often. That combo is discreet, sharp, and versatile enough to handle almost anything, whether it’s an interesting character on the street, reflections in a shop window, or even a wide cityscape.
User-Friendly for Beginners (and Still Fun for Experienced Shooters)
For anyone starting out, the A6400 is an easy camera to get comfortable with. The menus are fairly intuitive once you get the hang of them, and setting it up for your shooting style doesn’t take long.
What’s great about the A6400 being a few years old now is the sheer amount of resources available. There are countless guides, tutorials, and community discussions that make learning and troubleshooting simple.
A Reliable Travel Companion
During my travels through Japan, the A6400 really proved itself. Whether I was wandering through Tokyo’s neon streets at night or exploring quieter areas in Kyoto, it handled every situation. It’s small enough to carry all day without fatigue, yet capable enough to capture clean, detailed images even in tricky lighting.
I’ve carried heavier, “better” setups on trips, but at the end of the day, most of my favourite shots came from the A6400. It’s a camera that doesn’t get in the way, which lets you focus on the moment instead of the gear.
Final Thoughts
Even though newer models have been released since, I still think the Sony A6400 is one of the best cameras for beginners and anyone who loves shooting street-style photography. It’s affordable, reliable, and incredibly capable.
If you’re just starting out and looking for a camera that will grow with you, or you’re an experienced photographer wanting something lighter without sacrificing quality, the A6400 is absolutely worth considering.
After years of use, mine still delivers. and I can honestly say, it’s a camera I’ll keep around for a long time.
